How to Choose the Right Bag Size
Find the perfect dimensions for every bag type and use case.
Why Size Matters
Choosing the right bag size is just as important as choosing the right material. A bag that is too small forces you to use more bags than necessary, wasting material and negating some of the environmental benefit. A bag that is too large is awkward to carry, encourages overpacking, and can cause strain injuries from excessive weight.
The right-sized bag makes your shopping trip efficient, comfortable, and sustainable. This guide covers standard dimensions for every major bag category — grocery bags, totes, produce bags, string bags, lunch bags, wine bags, and drawstring bags — along with tips for matching size to your specific needs.
Reusable Grocery Bags
Grocery bags are the workhorses of the reusable bag world. They come in three standard size categories, each suited to different shopping patterns.
Standard Grocery Bag
Dimensions: 14" × 12" × 8" (width × height × depth)
Capacity: Approximately 0.8–1.0 cubic feet. Fits a standard grocery load of 10–15 items including packaged goods, produce, and dairy. Holds 20–30 lbs depending on material.
Best for: Regular weekly shops, individual shoppers, small households (1–2 people). Standard grocery bags are the most versatile size — they fit easily in shopping carts, are comfortable to carry, and match the typical checkout pattern.
Large Grocery Bag
Dimensions: 16" × 14" × 10"
Capacity: Approximately 1.3–1.5 cubic feet. Fits 15–25 items or 30–45 lbs. Can accommodate large boxes, multiple gallon jugs, or a whole load of bulky items like bread and chips.
Best for: Family households (3–4+ people), bulk shopping, shoppers who drive to the store and carry bags from car to kitchen. Large bags are also ideal for farmers' market runs where you buy in volume.
Extra-Large / Jumbo Grocery Bag
Dimensions: 20" × 16" × 12"
Capacity: Approximately 2.0–2.2 cubic feet. Holds 30–50 lbs — a full cart worth of groceries in 2–3 bags.
Best for: Extreme bulk shoppers, restaurant supply runs, and families who do weekly "stock-up" shops. These bags are heavy when full — ensure handles are well-padded and reinforced.
Foldable Grocery Bags
Dimensions (unfolded): Typically equivalent to standard or large grocery bags (14"×12" to 16"×14")
Packed size: 4" × 3" × 1.5" (fits in a pocket, purse, or glove compartment)
Best for: "Emergency" bags kept in the car, handbag, or backpack. Always having a bag ready eliminates the "I forgot my bags" excuse.
Tote Bags
Tote bags are the most multi-purpose bag type — equally at home on the grocery run, the commute, or the beach. Sizing is simpler than grocery bags as totes are typically described by their flat dimensions.
Small Tote
Dimensions: 10" × 12" (width × height)
Capacity: Light daily carry — a tablet, wallet, keys, phone, water bottle, and a light jacket.
Best for: Quick errands, lunch carry, farmers' market small hauls, and as a compact everyday purse alternative.
Medium Tote (Most Popular)
Dimensions: 14" × 16"
Capacity: The sweet spot. Fits a 13–15" laptop, A4 notebooks, a change of clothes, plus miscellaneous items. Can double as a grocery bag for 10–15 items.
Best for: Everyday carry, work/school commuting, moderate grocery trips, gym sessions, and travel day bag. If you buy only one tote, make it medium.
Large Tote
Dimensions: 16" × 20"
Capacity: Accommodates a 17" laptop, multiple books, gym clothes, and groceries. Essentially a carry-all.
Best for: Heavy daily carry, beach trips, laundry, large grocery hauls, and as a personal item on flights.
Extra-Large / Oversized Tote
Dimensions: 18" × 22" or larger
Capacity: Can hold a small duffel bag's worth of items. Often used for beach gear, yoga mats, or as a laundry bag.
Best for: Beach days, picnics, camping gear, and any situation where you need to carry large, lightweight items.
Produce Bags
Produce bags come in smaller sizes than grocery totes since they are used for individual fruit and vegetable purchases. They are typically made from lightweight mesh or thin cotton for breathability.
Small Produce Bag
Dimensions: 8" × 6"
Capacity: Approximately 1–2 lbs. Ideal for herbs (cilantro, parsley, basil), mushrooms, small chillies, garlic heads, and lemon/lime portions.
Medium Produce Bag
Dimensions: 10" × 8"
Capacity: 2–3 lbs. The most common size. Fits apples, oranges, onions, potatoes (4–6 medium), bell peppers, tomatoes, and avocados.
Large Produce Bag
Dimensions: 12" × 10"
Capacity: 3–5 lbs. Designed for leafy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce heads), large bunches of celery or broccoli, and bulk items like grapes or plums.
XL / Bulk Produce Bag
Dimensions: 14" × 12"
Capacity: 5–8 lbs. For large-volume produce purchases — whole cabbages, large winter squash, bulk carrot bags, and multi-pound fruit purchases.
Tip: A set of 5–8 produce bags in mixed sizes covers nearly every produce need. Look for bags with a drawstring closure and tare weight printed on the tag so cashiers can subtract the bag weight at checkout.
String Bags
String bags (also called mesh or net bags) are incredibly stretchy and can expand far beyond their resting dimensions.
Standard String Bag
Resting dimensions: 16" × 14"
Expanded capacity: Stretches to hold 20–30 lbs of groceries. The open mesh weave allows the bag to expand significantly — a string bag can hold the same volume as a large grocery bag when fully loaded.
Best for: Compact storage (folds to palm size) combined with surprising capacity. Excellent "always have with you" bag.
Large Market String Bag
Resting dimensions: 20" × 16"
Expanded capacity: Can hold 30–40 lbs. Commonly used in European markets for carrying everything from baguettes to melons.
Best for: Serious market shopping, beach gear, and laundry. The large size accommodates bulky, irregularly shaped items well.
Lunch Bags
Lunch bags prioritise thermal insulation and portability. Sizing is driven by what you need to keep cold or warm.
Kids Lunch Bag
Dimensions: 8" × 6" × 4"
Capacity: Fits a small bento box, sandwich, fruit pouch, water bottle, and a small ice pack. Designed for school lunches.
Standard Lunch Bag
Dimensions: 9" × 7" × 5"
Capacity: Fits a standard-sized meal prep container, sandwich, apple, yoghurt, water bottle, and ice pack. The most versatile lunch bag size for adults.
Large Lunch Tote
Dimensions: 11" × 8" × 6"
Capacity: Fits multiple meal containers, larger water bottles, snacks for the whole day, or a full meal plus leftovers. Common among shift workers, tradespeople, and anyone who needs a substantial packed lunch.
Wine & Bottle Bags
Wine bags are designed for bottle security and presentation. Dimensions are driven by standard wine bottle sizes.
Single Bottle Bag
Dimensions: 4" × 4" × 13"
Capacity: Fits one standard 750ml wine bottle. Some designs include a padded divider or thermal lining. Perfect for gifting or BYOB occasions.
Double Bottle Bag
Dimensions: 9" × 4" × 13"
Capacity: Fits two bottles side by side. A partition in the centre prevents bottles from clinking. Ideal for dinner party hosting or wine tasting outings.
Six-Bottle Carrier / Wine Tote
Dimensions: 14" × 10" × 13"
Capacity: Fits six standard bottles in a grid arrangement (2×3). Typically features reinforced handles and padded dividers. Heavy when full (approximately 20 lbs) — look for shoulder strap options.
Note: Always measure your bottles before purchasing. Champagne and sparkling wine bottles are taller (14–15") and may not fit standard wine bag depths. Larger format bottles (magnums = 1.5L) require specially sized carriers.
Drawstring Bags
Drawstring bags (also called cinch sacks or backpacks) are lightweight, packable carry-alls popular for gym, travel, and everyday use.
Small Drawstring Bag
Dimensions: 12" × 14"
Capacity: Light essentials — change of clothes, water bottle, towel, and small personal items. Common for yoga, gym sessions, or kids' PE kits.
Medium Drawstring Bag
Dimensions: 14" × 17"
Capacity: Fits gym clothes, shoes (in a separate bag), towel, toiletries, and a water bottle. The most popular size for general use. Can also serve as a daypack for travel.
Large Drawstring Bag
Dimensions: 16" × 20"
Capacity: Can function as an overnight bag — fits a weekend's worth of clothes, toiletries, and a book. Also ideal for carrying sports gear, picnic supplies, or beach essentials.
Material note: Drawstring bags are often made from lightweight nylon, RPET, or cotton. For gym use, RPET or nylon is preferable for water resistance. For everyday carry, cotton or canvas offers a better look and feel.
How to Measure Bag Capacity
Bag capacity is typically given in one of three ways. Understanding these helps you compare bags accurately.
Linear Dimensions (Width × Height × Depth)
This is the most common measurement for structured bags. Width is measured across the top opening, height from the bottom seam to the top edge (not including handles), and depth (gusset) from front to back at the bottom. A 14"×12"×8" bag has a flat width of 14", a height of 12", and a bottom depth of 8".
Flat Dimensions (Width × Height)
Used for unconstructed bags like totes and produce bags. Multiply width × height × an estimated depth to estimate volume. For a typical tote, assume a depth of about one-third of the width when filled.
Volume (Liters or Cubic Feet)
The most useful metric for actual capacity. A standard grocery bag is approximately 20–25 litres. A medium tote is 10–15 litres. A produce bag is 2–8 litres depending on size. Look for litre capacity in product specifications — it is the best cross-category comparison.
Quick Volume Reference
| Volume | Typical Bag Size | What It Holds |
|---|---|---|
| 2–5 L | Small produce bag | 1–2 lbs of fruit |
| 5–10 L | Medium produce bag / kids' lunch bag | 3–4 apples or a packed lunch |
| 10–15 L | Small-medium tote / standard lunch bag | Tablet, notebook, water bottle |
| 20–25 L | Standard grocery bag / medium tote | Full grocery load (10–15 items) |
| 30–40 L | Large grocery bag / large tote | Family grocery haul (20–25 items) |
| 45–60 L | XL grocery bag / large drawstring | Extreme bulk shop or weekend travel |
Weight Capacity Guidelines
Size and material determine how much weight a bag can safely carry. Overloading is the fastest way to damage a bag.
| Bag Type | Safe Weight (Light Fabric) | Safe Weight (Heavy Fabric) |
|---|---|---|
| Small Produce Bag | 2–3 lbs | 3–5 lbs |
| Standard Grocery Bag | 15–20 lbs | 25–35 lbs |
| Large Grocery Bag | 20–25 lbs | 30–45 lbs |
| Medium Tote | 10–15 lbs | 20–30 lbs |
| Large Tote | 15–20 lbs | 25–40 lbs |
| String Bag | 20–25 lbs | 30–40 lbs |
| Drawstring Bag | 10–15 lbs | 20–30 lbs |
"Light fabric" = non-woven PP, thin cotton, standard mesh. "Heavy fabric" = canvas, hemp, reinforced RPET.
Tips for Matching Size to Use Case
- Match bag size to cart space: Standard grocery bags (14"×12"×8") fit perfectly in most shopping carts. Very large bags may not sit well in cart baskets.
- Consider handle length: Bags intended for shoulder carry need longer handles (10–12" drop). Hand-carry bags work with shorter handles (6–8" drop). Over-the-shoulder bags should have a total handle length of at least 20".
- Dedicated produce bags vs one-size-fits-all: A set of small-to-medium produce bags (8–10 bags) is more useful than a single large produce bag. You can separate different types of produce and avoid crushing delicate items.
- Lunch bags need interior clearance: Measure your meal containers before choosing a lunch bag. A 9"×7"×5" bag may not fit a square bento box that is 8"×8". Check both the length and width of your containers.
- Wine bag length is critical: Standard 750ml wine bottles are 12–12.5" tall. Always add 1" to the bottle height for room to close the bag. Magnums (1.5L) need 15"+ bag depth.
- Drawstring bags compress: When not full, drawstring bags collapse flat. Their actual capacity depends on how much you fill them — a 16"×20" bag can hold a surprising amount when packed to the brim.
- String bags stretch differently: The mesh expands more in width than in height. A tall thin string bag becomes a wide, globe-shaped bag when loaded.
Common Size Mistakes
- Buying only large bags: While big bags seem more versatile, they are wasteful for small trips and encourage overpacking. A mix of sizes (2 standard, 2 large, 1 XL) is optimal.
- Ignoring handle drop: A tote with a 6" handle drop that you planned to wear on your shoulder will be awkward. Always check handle length against how you plan to carry it.
- Not measuring your fridge: If you use bags to organise your fridge (e.g., produce bags in the crisper), make sure the bags fit your fridge drawers. Oversized bags waste fridge space.
- Forgetting the gusset (depth): Two bags can have the same flat dimensions but very different capacities depending on how deep the gusset (bottom panel) is. A standard grocery bag with a 4" gusset holds half of one with an 8" gusset.
- Buying produce bags too small: A 6"×8" produce bag is too small for most fruits and vegetables. Start with 10"×8" as your smallest produce bag.
- Assuming "one size fits all": A bag that works for groceries may be terrible for lunch or wine. Different use cases genuinely need different proportions and features.
